My Pandemic Bio
One of my old mentors used to say “you are rewarded in public for what you practice in private”. I never disagreed, but I couldn’t have imagined how true this little phrase really was until living through almost four years of the pandemic. As risks increased, so did my willingness to learn new things, including many I had never done before in my entire life. But one thing I still haven’t figured out is how to get that good old fashioned public acknowledgement of private practice and work on new things that most of us appreciate, no matter how much we say we don’t. You know the kind of simple excitement that happens when you learn to bake something new and can’t wait to take it to the neighborhood potluck-and it receives rave reviews and makes all those hours testing and refining your recipe worth it.
My entry to motherhood consisted mostly of recovering from a c-section while nursing a newborn, setting up a virtual classroom for three children, cheering my husband on in the fight for toilet paper, and mournfully canceling all the flights for family and friends who had been excitedly awaiting my son’s birth.
It didn’t take me long though to assume my new self-proclaimed title of “Cruiseship Activity Director” where I began to scheme new ways to create joyous moments together- baking, dance parties, turning the classroom into a yoga studio, camping in the back yard- you name it, I did it. And along the way I learned some things and developed some new skills that I am confident would have never happened had my husband and I not made the decision and commitment to continually and consistently reduce our entire family’s risk.
I found it entertaining and affirming to take a minute or two to describe how I would introduce myself after these last 3.5 years by using an old format from the days in which I wasn’t home and wasn’t doing many of these things, but had to regularly describe my qualifications in a digestible way to potential clients. Maybe you would also enjoy making your own pandemic resume intro or bio. Ok, I know it’s not really a bio- but I like the sound of it and its close enough! But whatever you call it, it’s high time we find ways to publicly acknowledge not only the burdens we’ve faced, but the learning and growth that will always be ours, long after the pandemic ends.
A highly organized and driven COVID-mitigator with a proven ability to manage a vast array of projects from start to finish while navigating dynamic, complex, and sometimes volatile circumstances. My passion for learning about the scientific, non-hopium realities of COVID 19, have led me to develop a proven approach to real time problem solving, and decreasing exposure risk for our family of 6 throughout the last 3.5 years of an ongoing global pandemic. My efforts have resulted in the development of new skills, and the assumption of new roles, a sampling of which is included below.
